Negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in the Gaza Strip will take place during a special session of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Riyadh, scheduled for April 28 to 29. Forum's President Borge Brende announced that the talks will feature Palestinian National Authority head Mahmoud Abbas and senior representatives from several countries, including the US Secretary of State, as well as the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt.
Brende highlighted the importance of addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza and finding a way out of the impasse. He noted that the presence of Palestinian President Abbas is a significant signal, indicating the involvement of key players in the peace process. The organizers of the WEF special session expect officials from other Middle Eastern countries, including the crown prince of Oman, the foreign ministers of Bahrain and Kuwait, to join the discussions. In total, 220 high-ranking officials and 12 heads of state from 60 countries are expected to attend the special session.
Brende emphasized the potential for negotiations on the release of Israeli hostages and a possible ceasefire to gain momentum, with the participation of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Qatar's head of government and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani, and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. These countries are mediating negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will brief the meeting on the next round of talks held in Israel, focusing on efforts to renew ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip and the release of Israeli hostages. Brende expressed hope that the talks in Riyadh will contribute to moving the escalation of regional conflicts forward and bring the parties closer to finding a solution for Gaza. He also highlighted the special role to be played by Saudi Arabia, represented by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, in the talks.
