Recognition of the State of Palestine is the key to peace in the region, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said at a joint press conference with US President Joe Biden in Bethlehem, which was broadcast by the presidential office on social media.

"Recognizing the State of Palestine and giving the Palestinian people their legitimate rights is the key to peace in the region," Abbas said.

"Achieving peace depends on ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and establishing a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital," he added

President Mahmoud Abbas called on Biden to reopen the US consulate in East Jerusalem and to remove the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) from the list of terrorist organizations. President Abbas also demanded that the killers of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed during an Israeli military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin in early May, be brought to justice.

US President Joe Biden is on his visit to the Middle East, his plane landed at Ben Gurion Airport Wednesday afternoon. On his first Middle East tour as US president July 13-16, Biden will also visit Saudi Arabia in addition to Israel and the West Bank.
