Egypt registers Sputnik V vaccine

The Egyptian Drug Authority has registered the Russian vaccine against the coronavirus Sputnik V. Mahmoud Yass, the head of the Egyptian Drug Authority's Central Directorate for Biological and Innovative Products, announced this on Wednesday.


"On February 23, the authorities approved the emergency use of the Sputnik V and AstraZeneca (AZD 1222) imported from South Korea vaccines, after they passed the necessary laboratory testing at the Medicines Administration for safety, quality and efficacy," he said. - "With the licensing of these two vaccines, the total number of drugs licensed for emergency use in the new coronavirus pandemic has reached four."


Earlier, Egypt had approved emergency use of a vaccine from China's Sinopharm Corporation and AstraZeneca. Currently, according to Mahmoud Yass, the Drug Authority is studying and evaluating other vaccines.


According to the press office of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), "Egypt, the most populous country in the Middle East with more than 100 million people, became the 35th state in the world to approve the use of the Sputnik V vaccine."


"The decision to include Sputnik V in [Egypt's] national vaccine portfolio demonstrates confidence in the safety and high efficacy of the drug," commented RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev.


"Sputnik V is one of the world's top three coronavirus vaccines in terms of the number of approvals received by state regulators. Sputnik V is currently registered in Russia, Belarus, Argentina, Bolivia, Serbia, Algeria, Palestine, Venezuela, Paraguay, Turkmenistan, Hungary, UAE, Egypt, Iran, Republic of Guinea, Tunisia, Armenia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Republika Srpska ( the entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina), Lebanon, Myanmar, Pakistan, Mongolia, Bahrain, Montenegro, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Gabon, San Marino, Ghana, Syria, Kyrgyzstan and Guyana.
