The Astana Troika summit in Tehran can help reassess the Syrian settlement process. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this at a press conference following a meeting of the high-level Cooperation Council between Turkey and IRI held in the Iranian capital.
"The summit can help reevaluate and re-energize the Astana process. We will discuss this issue with Putin and Raisi and discuss the latest developments in Syria," he said.
On July 19, the heads of states that are guarantors of a peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict will meet in Tehran, with the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey attending the summit. Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader, said Monday that the sides plan to adopt a joint statement after the talks. According to him, the talks of the "troika" have been held regularly for the last five years. In July 2020, due to the worsening epidemiological situation, the summit was held by videoconference.
Russia, Turkey and Iran acted as guarantors of a peaceful settlement in Syria at talks in the Kazakh capital Astana in January 2017, hence the name "Astana process". Despite the renaming of Astana to Nur-Sultan in 2019, the name of the negotiation format remained the same.
