The Federation Council Committee on International Affairs supported the senators' proposal to create a group on cooperation with the Syrian parliament and will submit it to the House Council for approval. This decision was made at a committee meeting on Monday.

"There has been such a group in the Syrian parliament for a long time. There is a proposal to support the initiative of a group of our colleagues to create such a group [in the Federation Council]," its chairman Konstantin Kosachev said at the committee meeting. "If there are no objections, we will submit this issue for approval by the House Council," he added.

According to the senator, it is proposed to elect Sergei Muratov, a member of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, to head the group. "He has a genuine interest in this," Kosachev said.

He recalled that there is no separate friendship group with the Syrian parliament in the Federation Council, and its necessity is conditioned by the fact that "the processes of political normalization of the situation in the country are moving forward." "The Syrian parliament is vested with constitutional powers and there is a new agenda of inter-parliamentary cooperation," said the chairman of the Council's International Committee.
