Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian at a meeting with Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary-General Zhang Ming "noted Tehran's determination" to join the SCO. The Islamic republic's foreign ministry said this on Monday in its Telegram channel.

"Hossein Amir Abdollahian on Monday during a meeting with Zhang Ming and his delegation noted Iran's determination and seriousness [on the issue of] participation and an active role in the SCO," the ministry said in a statement.

"We believe that the organization can play an important role in new international security and economic mechanisms, and the development of economic cooperation will contribute to sustainable security," Abdollahian said.

At the last September 15-16 summit in Samarkand, SCO leaders signed a memorandum on Iran's commitments to join the SCO. Also at the summit, Belarus began the process of registration of membership in the organization. In addition, it was decided to start the procedure of granting the status of a dialogue partner to Bahrain, Kuwait, Maldives, Myanmar, and the United Arab Emirates.
