Iranian Foreign Ministry: 90% agreement reached in negotiations on Iran's nuclear dossier

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that the countries involved in the negotiations to resume the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program have reached a draft with which everyone, including the United States, agrees by 90%.


"The new Iranian government has resumed a series of negotiations on nuclear issues. We have come to a draft that is 90% agreeable to the 4+1, as well as to the Americans. We are in contact with the US regarding the lifting of sanctions, they [contacts] are made through the EU and the foreign ministers of some countries," he said in an interview published on Wednesday in La Repubblica newspaper. The minister acknowledged some progress made, particularly during the last round of talks in Doha, but acknowledged that there are still issues that need to be resolved.

 

"We demand reliable economic guarantees. If a Western company signs an agreement in Iran, it must have confidence that the project will bear fruit. Iran is determined to reach a serious and long-term agreement on its nuclear program," the minister assured.


Earlier, Enrique Mora, political director of the EU External Action Service, said that the indirect talks between the US and Iran on restoring the nuclear deal held in Doha had failed to achieve the progress they had hoped for.


The five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany struck a nuclear deal, the JCPOA, with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear program. Former US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 to withdraw from that deal. The current head of the US administration, Joe Biden, has repeatedly signaled a willingness to bring the US back into the nuclear deal. Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna since April to restore the JCPOA to its original form.
