The presence of the Russian Armed Forces in southern Syria contributes to stability and security in the region, Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Hussein Abdallah al-Safadi said on Thursday at a press conference following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.


According to the Jordanian foreign minister, at the meeting, the sides focused on the situation in Syria in view of security in the south of the Arab republic and threats, including for Jordan. "We discussed the efforts that need to be made together to reduce these threats and further stabilize the south of Syria," he said. - "There is a serious threat of drug smuggling across the Jordanian-Syrian border, including by armed groups, terrorist groups operating freely in the area. Of course we believe that the presence of the Russian armed forces in the south of Syria adds stability and security and reduces all these risks, including for our country."


As al-Safadi pointed out, the need for further coordination between Russia and Jordan to counter all challenges, including in southern Syria, and to make joint efforts to expand the platform of interaction was stressed. "We also discussed efforts to politically resolve the Syrian crisis, including those based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254, ensuring the sovereignty, territorial integrity, security of Syria and creating the necessary conditions for the free return of all refugees and returning Syria to its rightful place in the region, as well as a place in all international arenas," he added.
