Nebenzia: Russia will insist on holding open UN Security Council meetings on Syrian chemical weapons

25 January 2021

Russia would protest against attempts to return to closed debates of the UN Security Council on the liquidation of Syrian chemical weapons. Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia said so in an exclusive interview with TASS.

He said that Britain, as the UN Security Council chair in February, proposes to return to a discussion of the topic "behind closed doors," that is, without video broadcasting, and without the participation of a representative of Syria. "But we object to this and will continue to do so," he stressed.

"It was our initiative to make these meetings open," the diplomat recalled. - We don't see why they should be hidden from the general public."

He expressed the opinion that "the international community should know what is going on around the Syrian chemical case." "So we will insist that the meeting be open," Nebenzia concluded.
