Polyanskiy: United States seeks to turn the OPCW into a tool for pursuing its interests

The United States and its allies want to turn the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) into a tool for implementing their own geopolitical interests, Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said on Wednesday at a meeting of the General Assembly.

"Every day there is more and more evidence that the United States and its Euro-Atlantic allies are seeking to turn the OPCW, a specialized and technical international structure by its nature, into a tool for implementing their own geopolitical interests," he said.

The diplomat noted that such approaches were particularly vivid in the investigation of alleged incidents involving the use of chemical weapons in Syria, where the blame was repeatedly placed on Damascus without any evidence. He advised the international community to look to the United States itself in its efforts to combat the proliferation of chemical weapons. "If we focus on the country aspects, it would make sense for the OPCW to also report, for example, on the progress in the plan to destroy the US chemical arsenal which is still not completed", - Polyanskiy said.

On Wednesday, the UN General Assembly considered a draft resolution on the world organization's cooperation with the OPCW in investigating the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria. The Russian mission called it an unbalanced and highly politicized document.
