Putin held telephone talks with Iranian President Raisi

Russian president Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in a telephone conversation with Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi discussed the fight against the coronavirus, The Kremlin press service reported.


"The mutual intention to strengthen mutually beneficial Russian-Iranian relations in various fields was confirmed. In particular, the parties noted the successful development of trade and economic ties and the established cooperation in the fight against the spread of coronavirus infection," the statement said.


Earlier on Tuesday, it became known that the Russian president decided to self-isolate after contact with cases of covid. As the Kremlin press service specified, in view of this, Putin will participate in the CSTO Collective security council session in Dushanbe, the meeting of the SCO Council of heads of state and the joint meeting of the CSTO and SCO heads of state in a video-conference link.


Last week, the Iranian ambassador to the Russian Federation Kazem Jalali told reporters that a meeting between Raisi and Putin was planned on the margins of the SCO summit. After the announcement of the Russian leader's self-imposed isolation, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that a face-to-face meeting with the Iranian president had been postponed indefinitely.


Iran nuclear deal


Putin discussed with Raisi the situation around the Iran nuclear deal. 


"Several topics on the international agenda were touched upon, including the situation around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program," the report said.


The Kremlin press service added that "considering the participation of the Iranian president as an observer at the September 17 summit of the Shanghai cooperation organization in Dushanbe, they discussed issues of current importance within the organization".


Following their conversation, the presidents agreed to continue contacts.
