Israel's actions are worsening the humanitarian crisis and depriving Palestinians of hope to return to their homes, stated Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya during a UN Security Council meeting on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
"The problems of the Palestinian population unfortunately are not limited to Gaza alone. We are extremely concerned about the situation in the West Bank, where we are seeing an increase in the intensity of Israeli military operations," Nebenzya said. "The actions of West Jerusalem are causing large-scale destruction, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis, and destroying displaced families' hopes of returning. We regularly receive reports of Palestinians being killed, land seizures, and building demolitions. This is unacceptable."
Nebenzya called on Israel to immediately halt violence in the occupied Palestinian territories, ensure protection of civilians, allow unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.
He stressed that Israel's blockade of Gaza must be lifted, adding that the military approach to resolving the hostage situation in Gaza has proven ineffective. Nebenzya urged for a swift ceasefire through international mediation and the release of all detainees.
The diplomat also welcomed plans by Saudi Arabia and France to hold an international conference in late July in New York supporting the two-state solution. "The long-standing Arab-Israeli conflict proves there can be no other peaceful scenario for the Middle East," the Russian representative emphasized.
