Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad discussed the situation in Syria with a focus on the need to promote a comprehensive political settlement.
"The ministers discussed developments in and around the situation in Syria with a focus on the need to promote a comprehensive political settlement," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday. The parties also discussed a number of current issues of Russian-Syrian cooperation, including preparations for Mekdad's planned visit to Moscow.
The foreign ministers also reviewed the results of the 17th international meeting on Syria in the Astana format, which ended on December 22 in Nur-Sultan, as well as the issues of organizing the planned 7th meeting of the inter-Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva in January 2022. "The Russian side stressed the importance of maintaining a rhythmic and fruitful work on the preparation of constitutional reform within this inter-Syrian forum," Smolensk Square added.
The Russian Foreign Ministry informed that Lavrov reiterated Russia's commitment to continue efforts to achieve the goals enshrined in UN Security Council Resolution 2254, including ensuring Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.
"There was also a detailed exchange of views on the implementation of UNSC resolution 2585 on the extension of the cross-border mechanism for humanitarian supplies to Syria. A mutual intention was emphasized for further continuation of coordination of approaches of the two countries in this direction," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
The conversation was held at the request of the Syrian side.
