Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev held telephone talks with the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani. They discussed cooperation between the two states in the security sphere, as well as the settlement of the situation in Afghanistan, the press service of the Russian Security Council said on Thursday.

"Nikolai Patrushev and Ali Shamkhani discussed a number of issues of Russian-Iranian security cooperation, as well as the international agenda, in particular the problems of the Afghan settlement," the report said.

It is noted that the conversation was held "in continuation of regular contacts through the security councils of the two countries".

Patrushev and Shamkhani last met in person in December 2019 in Tehran, where the second meeting of the mechanism of multilateral consultations on Afghan issues took place. In February 2020, the secretary of the Russian Security Council congratulated his Iranian counterpart on the 41st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution; no other contacts between Patrushev and Shamkhani have been officially reported since then.
