UN Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel.
“The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. He hopes this agreement will halt the violence, destruction, and suffering of the peoples of both countries,” stated UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Tuesday.
Guterres called on both parties to fully adhere to and swiftly implement their commitments under the agreement. He also urged progress toward the complete fulfillment of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The Israeli Security Cabinet had earlier approved the ceasefire plan. Subsequently, US President Joe Biden announced that the agreement includes provisions for Lebanon to regain control over its territory within 60 days. Following this, the Israeli army is to gradually withdraw from Lebanese territory. The agreement also aims to facilitate the safe return of civilians to their communities on both sides and initiate reconstruction efforts.
UN Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, calls for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and security assurances provided by the Lebanese army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
