The city of Baikonur will mark its 70th anniversary on June 2 with the opening of a new museum and a festive fireworks display, according to city administrator Konstantin Busygin in an interview with TASS.
"Yesterday we welcomed Baikonur veterans, a large delegation from Roscosmos, and executives from space industry enterprises who have arrived for the celebration," Busygin said. "Today, we’ll hold a ceremony to award honorary citizenship of Baikonur, host celebrations at the city stadium, open an open-air museum, and end the evening with a fireworks show."
He added that the anniversary events began back in January, commemorating the arrival of the first unit of military engineers in Tyuratam, who laid the foundation for what would become the Baikonur spaceport.
Baikonur officially celebrates its founding on June 2, 1955—the day when Research and Testing Range No. 5 was established. The site later grew into the world’s largest spaceport and remains central to Russia’s space activities.
