The Palestinian movement Hamas has expressed acceptance of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah, asserting that it does not feel betrayed by the deal. Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, made the statement in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
According to Naim, no agreement involving Lebanon, Yemen, or Iran can bring peace to the region unless the Palestinian issue is resolved. “Hezbollah did not act alone. The Lebanese people decided that reaching an agreement with Israel was in their best interest, and we accept that because we never sought Lebanon's destruction by Israel,” he explained.
Naim emphasized that Hamas will continue its fight “for the oppressed Palestinian people,” but it is prepared to step aside if its presence complicates post-conflict reconstruction efforts in the region. He also mentioned the movement’s readiness to propose a "technical government focused on specific civil tasks," hinting at a potential role within the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
Reflecting on the broader Middle East crisis, Naim criticized US President Joe Biden, stating, “The situation in the Middle East couldn’t be worse than it is under Biden.” He contrasted this with former President Donald Trump, noting, “Trump promised to end wars.” The interview was conducted in Istanbul.
The ceasefire plan in Lebanon was officially approved by Israel's security cabinet on November 26. Shortly afterward, US President Joe Biden announced that the agreement includes the restoration of Lebanese control over its territory within 60 days. Following this, Israeli forces will gradually withdraw, allowing civilians on both sides to return to their communities and begin rebuilding.
