"Hegemonic fantasies": Pushkov responded harshly to the US State Department

10 September 2020

The US State Department is trying to "wishful thinking," Senator Alexey Pushkov said in Telegram, commenting on the words of US Assistant Secretary of state for Middle East Affairs David Schenker.

Earlier, the US diplomat expressed concern about Russia's "involvement" in the Libyan conflict and said that "it was a big mistake to let Russia into Syria." This provoked sharp criticism from Pushkov.

"What kind of hegemonic fantasy is this-let it go, don't let it go?! Yes, it did not depend on the United States: Obama was confronted with the fact of Moscow's actions and could not oppose it," the parliamentarian said.

The Senator noted that Russia came to Syria "in spite of and in addition to the United States," and now Washington should not pretend that they could prevent this.

The politician stressed that Moscow's participation in the conflict saved the entire Middle East region from disaster. As Pushkov noted, without Russian assistance to Damascus in the Syrian conflict, the IGIL (banned in the Russian Federation) could have prevailed, which would have declared its own Caliphate in the country.

"This is exactly what the US was doing," the politician concluded.

Earlier, presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian military was not taking part in the operation in Libya, the Kremlin was also unaware of the organizational groups of Russians in this country. Russia's charge d'affaires in Libya, Jamshed Boltaev, also told RIA Novosti that the allegations about the presence of Russian mercenaries in Libya were unreliable, and the accusations against Moscow were groundless and not supported by facts.
