Tehran expects the first contact between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to take place soon, Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali told TASS on Wednesday on the sidelines of the XII International Economic Summit "Russia - Islamic World: KazanSummit 2021."
"God willing, there will be contact between Mr. Raisi and Mr. Putin as soon as possible," he said.
According to him, both sides are focused on expanding cooperation. The diplomat recalled that Putin had earlier congratulated Raisi on his election victory. "In the new period, our relations will further develop," Jalali pointed out.
The 13th presidential election in the history of modern Iran was held on June 18. It was attended by 28.9 million people. Raisi received 17.9 million votes. The country's Interior Ministry said he was declared the official winner. Raisi's inauguration will take place on August 5.
Putin sent a congratulatory telegram to Raisi on June 19. In it he noted that "relations between the countries are traditionally friendly and good-neighborly," and expressed hope that the activities of the new president "will contribute to the further development of constructive bilateral cooperation in various directions, as well as partnership cooperation in international affairs."
