Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani welcomed a Russian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak in Baghdad, according to the prime minister’s press office.
The delegation included Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev, First Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin, and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov.
Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in energy, artificial intelligence, and digital cooperation. Both sides emphasized the historical significance of Iraq-Russia relations, noting the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024, as stated by the Iraqi National News Agency (INA).
Prime Minister Al-Sudani expressed Iraq’s commitment to establishing mechanisms for deepening mutually beneficial relations with Russia, which he described as serving the interests of both nations.
On November 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with Al-Sudani. They discussed the Middle East escalation, cooperation within the OPEC+ framework, and bilateral partnerships in trade, transport, and humanitarian sectors.
