Russia and Iran are developing under strong external pressure; both countries are united by the desire to defend the interests of their peoples. Chairman of the Federation Council's Foreign Affairs Committee Konstantin Kosachev said this on Tuesday at a meeting with Mojtab Zolnuri, head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran's Mejlis (unicameral parliament).

"Iran and Russia are developing under powerful external pressure. I am sure that our countries are united by the desire to protect their national sovereignty, to defend the interests of their respective peoples. And in this sense, we have certainly supported, support and will support each other," Kosachev said.

He stressed that Iranian and Russian parliamentarians have always had very close contacts through the relevant committees. The senator also added that Iran and Russia are very important participants in global processes of international politics.

According to a statement released by the press service of the Federation Council, Kosachev and Zolnuri confirmed their mutual willingness to develop interaction between the specialized committees. "During the talks, the need to strengthen bilateral economic ties was noted, regional issues were touched upon, as well as a wide range of topics, including energy and agriculture," it reads.
