Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan held talks on defining state border lines

03 February 2023

Representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have held another round of talks on the remaining disputed sections of the common border. This was reported on Friday by the representation of the head of the Kyrgyz state in the Batken region.

"The delegations of the sides held talks on the border in the village of Khistevarz in the Bobojon-Ghafurov district of Tajikistan," the statement said. The Kyrgyz side at the meeting was headed by Presidential Representative in the Batken region Abdukarim Alimbayev, the Tajik side - by Head of the Sughd region Rajabboy Ahmadzoda.

During the meeting the sides discussed the situation in the border areas of the two countries.

Representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan acknowledged that all issues related to disputed territories should be resolved exclusively through negotiations. The delegations also developed a plan of joint activities to build confidence, regulate cross-border issues and prevent actions that lead to deterioration of relations between the citizens of the two states.

The state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is approximately 980 km long. Negotiations on its delimitation (definition of the state border with description of its passage and mapping) have been going on since December 2002. To date, about two-thirds of the border line has been defined and mutually recognized by the states, and the remaining sections are considered disputed. The unsettled situation has repeatedly led to conflicts involving local residents and soldiers of the two republics, including some with the use of firearms. The most recent one happened in early fall 2022, with more than 60 people from the Kyrgyz side being killed in the clashes.
