Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen stressed the need to continue the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee without foreign interference at a meeting in Moscow on Thursday.

"The interlocutors exchanged views on the prospects for advancing the political process, led and implemented by the Syrians themselves with UN assistance, as spelled out in UN Security Council Resolution 2254," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. - "There was a general opinion about the necessity to continue the work of the Constitutional Committee without preconditions and interference from the outside, which is a unique platform for direct inter-Syrian dialogue and an important confidence-building measure".

Smolensk Square informed that Lavrov and Pedersen discussed in detail the current situation in Syria "with a focus on the urgent tasks of a comprehensive humanitarian response given the deteriorating socio-economic situation in the country against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic." "The issues of intensifying the relevant international efforts and consolidating the international community around the political and diplomatic settlement of the Syrian crisis based on the full restoration of the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the SAR were also considered," the diplomatic office added.

The Ministry also reported that Pedersen had separate detailed consultations with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin on Thursday.
