Lavrov urged Bishkek to respond to nationalism against Russian speakers

16 August 2021

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in a telephone conversation with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbaev discussed cases of domestic nationalism against the Russian-speaking population.

"Lavrov drew his interlocutor's attention to the wide resonance in Russian society in connection with cases of domestic nationalism against members of the Russian-speaking population in Kyrgyzstan. The minister called on the authorities of the Kyrgyz Republic to react as quickly as possible to such incidents in order to avoid infringement of the rights and dignity of our compatriots," said the Russian Foreign Ministry.

For his part, Kazakbaev assured Lavrov that the country's leadership will firmly oppose any manifestations of nationalism and continue to strengthen the role of the Russian language in order to fully ensure the rights of the Russian-speaking population.

In early August in Kyrgyzstan, a man attacked a female employee of a children's center because she spoke to him in Russian. And in June of this year a nine-year-old child was beaten by his peers from the judo club. According to the boy's parents, the reason was inter-religious discord. The Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation (HRC) Commission on International Cooperation has already called for increased measures to protect compatriots in Kyrgyzstan.
