Media: Turkish drone attacks Kurdish posts in Syria's Qamishli

09 August 2022

A Turkish Air Force drone struck Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) posts in the city of Qamishli in the northeastern province of Al-Hasakah, Al Ekhbariya TV channel reported on Tuesday.

According to the channel, as a result of the attack in al-Mahmaqia and al-Hizam al-Gharbi areas, SDF fighters and civilians were killed or wounded; their number is being specified.

On August 6, a Turkish drone attack in Qamishli killed four people and wounded three others.

According to SANA news agency, Turkish artillery has not stopped shelling the town of Tell Tamer and its surroundings in northwestern Al-Hasakah. On Tuesday, fire was opened on the village of al-Salmasa, where one civilian was killed. Earlier, the areas of El-Derbasiya and Abu Rasain came under heavy fire, forcing residents to flee their homes and move from the border area inland of the province.

Turkey conducted a military Operation Peace Spring in northern Syria in October 2019, creating a 30-kilometer security zone along its border. Ankara-backed Syrian armed opposition formations stationed there are fighting against Kurdish units.

On July 18, the SDF command announced a general mobilization in Kurdish-controlled territories due to the threat of an invasion by Turkish troops. Earlier, Damascus sent military reinforcements and armored vehicles to the northern regions at the Kurds' request.
