Putin Discusses Priority Steps in Relations with CIS Countries

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a video conference with the permanent members of the Security Council (SC) to discuss key immediate steps needed in relations with Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries.

 

Opening the traditional Friday operational meeting, Putin announced the topic: “Today, we will talk about one of the most important areas of our policy—the CIS space. We will discuss work with certain CIS countries, what is urgent and important for us in this direction, and what we should consider as our next steps and goals.”

 

The President handed the floor to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as the main speaker. Other participants were also invited to share their views.

 

Among those attending the meeting were Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko, Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev, Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, Kremlin Chief of Staff Anton Vaino, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, and heads of the FSB and SVR, Alexander Bortnikov and Sergey Naryshkin.

 

Putin regularly convenes operational meetings with permanent Security Council members about once a week, usually on Fridays. These sessions address the most critical issues concerning various aspects of national security. The previous meeting focused on regional security.
