Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the work his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon is doing to popularize the Russian language.

"The president of Tajikistan, Emomali Sharipovich Rahmon, pays very much attention to this. We all, I mean all those who are interested in promoting the Russian language abroad, including in the Central Asian republics, should be grateful to him for that," Putin said on Wednesday during a meeting with teachers, students and parents on the eve of the new school year. So the president commented on the speech of a student from Tajikistan, Abdullokhodzha Babaev, who in September will begin studying to become a doctor at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN).

Putin added that he recently discussed current issues of interaction with Rahmon. "He [Rahmon] almost always raises the issue of Russian assistance to Tajikistan in developing the Russian language. We have even outlined specific plans in this regard, additional to what has been done on this matter," Putin noted.

He congratulated Babayev on his admission to RUDN. "I am very pleased to hear that the program that we, together with the president of Tajikistan, once started, and which was to ensure the sending of our specialists to the republic, that it works and brings such good results. We will continue," summarized the head of state.
