Russian and Syrian militaries begin joint preparations for ARMY-2021 in Latakia

14 April 2021

Russian military police officers and soldiers of the Syrian army held their first joint training at the Shqayfat training ground in Latakia province, where they practiced exercises in shooting for participation in the Army International Games - 2021, Viktor Zaitsev, deputy chief of staff and head of the military police department of the Russian Forces Group in Syria, told reporters.

"We are at the training ground and we do not stop improving our skills and abilities even during special tasks. At the moment we are practicing the "Firing Line" stage, where we are improving our skills of practical shooting from small arms, elements of aiming and accurate target engagement. We are also exchanging experience with soldiers from the Syrian Arab Republic on this stage and showing them tactical firing techniques. We hope that in the future they will take part in the ARMY and our Guardian of Order phases," said Zaytsev.

He noted that multiple winners of the Army International Games, who will also take part in ARMY-2021, participated in the training as part of a group of Russian military police officers.

"Shooting is carried out with small arms (Makarov pistol, Kalashnikov rifle) on two ranges. The first range is the Makarov pistol. The second one is the long-range at distances of 70 and 120 meters. These are machine gun targets," said Andrei Khovyatsky, coach and deputy commandant of the airbase in Khmeimim.

He specified that this exercise has been used at the ARMY since 2017. "Now the process is getting more complicated, we are working in pairs, we are moving to a higher level of improving the fire training of our troops," Khovyatsky noted.
