Russian Foreign Ministry welcomes approval of early parliamentary elections in Iraq

21 January 2022

The Russian MFA welcomed the approval of the results of last October's parliamentary elections in Iraq and expressed hope that the Iraqi parliament will manage to form a new capable government in time.

"We welcome the approval of the results (December 27, 2021) of the early elections to the Council of Representatives (Parliament) of Iraq, which took place on October 10, 2021. <...> We hope that the Iraqi parliamentarians will be able to form a new capable government within the time frame established by law, supported by all major political forces and ethnic and religious groups of the country," the Russian MFA said in a response to media queries received for a press conference by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday.

The ministry added that it considers the elections to be "an important stage on the way to recovery" of the current situation in Iraq. They also expressed their intention to further expand multidimensional Russian-Iraqi cooperation.

"Iraq is one of the key partners of Russia in the Middle East region with which we are traditionally linked by ties of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation. We maintain regular contacts both with representatives of federal authorities and the leadership of the Kurdish autonomy. We always take into account the imperative of respect for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Iraq," the ministry concluded.
