Ryabkov: participants in the meeting on the nuclear deal did not accept the idea of the US to restore sanctions

02 September 2020

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said he did not accept Washington's initiative to restore sanctions against Tehran at a meeting of the Joint Commission of Iran and the "five" international mediators (Russia, Great Britain, Germany, China, France) in Vienna.

"We are witnessing an important process of consolidation of the JCPOA participants (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program-ed. TASS) in positions of rejection of this American idea. And we are confident that the results of today's event will help our colleagues in New York to continue working in the right direction, " he told reporters on Tuesday.

Ryabkov drew attention to the fact that all participants of the meeting again spoke in favor of preserving the JCPOA. According to him, the parties also assessed the current implementation of the nuclear deal with Iran and discussed steps to increase the chances of its preservation.

In addition, Ryabkov again pointed to the legal insignificance of the US attempts to restore sanctions against Iran and impose its "one-sided reading of the situation" on the world community, despite all arguments. "We are sure that if the international community and the members of the Security Council continue to be principled in their approach, and we are working for this, then there will be a situation when the United States, in fact, will be the only one in the UN Security Council who adheres to this paradoxical point of view. At the very least, a unique variant of development of events seems quite real. Thus, the US may be in a serious loss if it does not reconsider its unjustified position and does not take into account the obvious things," the senior diplomat added.
