Syria says Turkey fails to respect its obligations as guarantor of Astana format

23 November 2022

Turkey is not respecting its obligations as a guarantor of the Astana format; Ankara's actions in northern Syria are unacceptable, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Ayman Susan said on Wednesday at a press conference following the 19th international meeting on Syria in the Astana format.

"The problem of the Astana format is that the Turkish side does not respect its commitments. This is a concern that all participants in Astana are talking about, including the guarantor countries. They are trying to convey to the Turkish side that all these actions are unacceptable and only lead to an escalation of the situation in Syria and the region as a whole," he said, commenting on the Turkish air operation in northern Syria.

Susan said Damascus "will do whatever it takes" to protect its territory in accordance with international law.
