Syrian Foreign Minister: Palestinians need to strengthen unity through dialogue

10 January 2022

Syria takes a principled position to support the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state, Faisal Mekdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab republic, said this, as reported by the SANA news agency on Sunday.

At a meeting in Damascus with a Palestinian delegation led by General Jibril Rajoub, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Palestine National Liberation Movement (Fatah), he spoke in favor of strengthening Palestinian unity. "Dialogue is needed to unite the Palestinian ranks and realize national aspirations," Mekdad said.

The Syrian foreign minister stressed that Damascus "condemns the repression of the Israeli authorities and their criminal policy of establishing illegal settlements in the occupied lands." "Syria and Palestine face Israeli aggression and violations of international law on a constant basis," he said.

For his part, Rajoub gave the minister a message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from Mahmoud Abbas, head of the State of Palestine. The general congratulated the Syrian people and its leadership "for the victories achieved in the fight against terrorism," and called for the lifting of unjust unilateral sanctions imposed against Damascus.

The Fatah Central Committee secretary also expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue with all Palestinian parties "to develop a strong position in defense of Palestinian rights in the regional and international arena".
