Russia expects Iran to ratify the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea soon signed by the Caspian Five countries in 2018. Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov said this on Thursday at a press conference following talks with Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mukhtar Tleuberdi.
“We are expecting Iran to complete the ratification procedures for the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea soon, which was signed three years ago in Aktau. This important document will come into force and strengthen the foundation of our cooperation in the Caspian Sea”, he said.
The Presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea in Aktau on 12 August 2018, following the V Caspian Summit. The document is open-ended and will enter into force after ratification by all five signatory states. So far four parties have ratified the Convention: Turkmenistan (December 2018), Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan (February 2019) and Russia (October 2019).
