31 January 2023

The CIS leaders invited representatives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the BRICS countries to take part in the economic forum of the Commonwealth, which will be held in Moscow in March. CIS Secretary-General Sergei Lebedev told reporters on Tuesday.

"The Economic council meeting will be held in Moscow on March 17 simultaneously with the traditional CIS economic forum. We hope that there will be representatives of all the Commonwealth countries, and we have invited representatives of the SCO countries, BRICS and, of course, our EEU partners," Lebedev said.

Currently, the SCO includes Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Iran is in the process of joining the organization. Afghanistan and Mongolia have observer status. The September 2022 SCO summit in Samarkand launched a mechanism for Belarus, which now has observer status, to join the organization. The dialogue partners are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Egypt, Nepal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Turkey.
