CSTO Chief Warns of Risks in Western Reluctance for Dialogue

27 November

The refusal of Western nations to engage with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) highlights a troubling disregard for how international security can be effectively achieved, CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov said in an interview with TASS.

“The West’s stance reveals a dangerous misunderstanding of what modern security entails and the methods needed to uphold it,” he remarked.

Tasmagambetov pointed out that the CSTO has not cut ties with Western states on its own accord and noted that forums like the United Nations ensure the organization's voice cannot be entirely ignored. He cited a July 2024 UN Security Council discussion initiated by Russia, which examined the roles of the CSTO, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in global peacekeeping efforts. He also mentioned the November 18 UN General Assembly resolution supporting cooperation between the UN and the CSTO, adopted despite resistance from NATO countries.

“Calls for fair international dialogue and equal partnerships should always be welcomed,” Tasmagambetov emphasized, underscoring the need for greater openness and mutual respect in global diplomacy.
