Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed optimism that the recently brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will become permanent. Speaking at the TRT World Media Forum in Istanbul, he also emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further humanitarian suffering.
Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s stance on facilitating a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "We hope the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be lasting. A prompt ceasefire in Gaza is essential to prevent the creation of more orphans," he said, underscoring Turkey's readiness to contribute to ending violence and establishing lasting peace in the region.
He also emphasized Turkey’s commitment to halting the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. "We are prepared to offer full support to stop the genocide in Gaza and pave the way for enduring peace," Erdogan stated.
During Erdogan’s speech, a participant interrupted, alleging that Israel continues to trade with Turkey using Turkish ports. Erdogan responded firmly, saying, "Do not speak the language of Zionists here," before security escorted the individual out of the venue.
The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, the first since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023, took effect on November 27. US President Joe Biden announced that the agreement includes provisions for the Lebanese army and state security forces to regain control over Lebanese territories within 60 days. Following this, the Israeli military is set to withdraw gradually from Lebanon.
