Iraq Conducts First Population Census in 37 Years

25 November

Iraq’s population has reached 45.4 million, according to the results of the country’s first comprehensive census in 37 years. The figures were announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed  Al-Sudani during a special press conference.

“The current population of Iraq is 45,407,495, including residents and refugees,” Al-Sudani stated, as reported by Shafaq News.

He detailed that men constitute 50.1% of the population, while women account for 49.8%. Additionally, 36.1% of the population is under 15 years old, and 3.7% are over 65, highlighting the country’s demographic structure.

The nationwide census, the first since 1987, was conducted on November 20. The 1987 census recorded a population of 16.3 million, while a 1997 count, which excluded the Kurdish autonomous regions, reported a rise to 22 million. The World Bank had estimated Iraq's population in 2023 to be approximately 45.5 million.
