Kosachev assessed the US decision to recognize Cuba and Iran as sponsors of terrorism

There is no real justification for Washington's accusations against Cuba and Iran, the US only confirmed the practice of applying sanctions policy to undesirable countries, Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

"If there is anything stable in the turbulence in which the US has found itself amid the scandalous election and all subsequent events, it is the persistent claims against Cuba and Iran. Washington has put Cuba on a list of countries that allegedly support terrorism, according to a statement by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo. Not only that: the media are reporting about the forthcoming public accusation of the State Department against Iran for cooperation with the terrorist group Al Qaeda*," the senator said.

Kosachev noted that in this situation, "of course, there is no real reason for it." Washington has long needed no grounds for new restrictions and recalled the lines from Ivan Krylov's fable "The Wolf and the Lamb": "You are to blame for the fact that I want to eat".

In his opinion, it's hard to say what looks more ridiculous - the US accusations about elections in other countries or claims of supporting terrorism, in particular, "after the blatant act of state terrorism against Iranian special forces commander Qasem Soleimani, which the White House proudly takes credit for".

"But the message to the world is clear: no matter what happens in the US, sanctions and repression of the undesirable abroad will remain a systemic factor. In fact, we had no doubt about it," he concluded.

On the night of January 3, 2020, in the area of Baghdad International Airport, the USA carried out an operation on liquidation of the Iranian General and Commander of the special unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Qasem Soleimani and the Deputy Head of Al-Hashd al-Shaabi Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. In Washington, they are believed to have been involved in organizing the attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad on December 31, 2019. In response, Iran struck US bases in Iraq.
