The Kremlin has condemned a recent attack by Islamist militants on the government-held city of Aleppo, calling it an assault on Syria's sovereignty. Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov made the statement during a briefing.
“This is undoubtedly an assault on Syria’s sovereignty in this region,” Peskov declared. “We support the Syrian authorities in their efforts to quickly establish order and restore constitutional governance in this area.”
The assault, carried out by militants from Jabhat al-Nusra (banned in Russia) and allied radical groups, took place on November 27. The terrorists advanced dangerously close to Aleppo, securing several strategic positions within 7–10 kilometers of the city. Aleppo was previously liberated from unlawful armed groups in 2016.
Despite the militants’ offensive, Syrian government forces managed to halt their progress on several fronts surrounding Aleppo. Reports indicate heavy losses for the attackers, with several hundred militants eliminated.
