Lavrov: Afghanistan's neighbors can help the country overcome the crisis

16 September 2021

The countries neighboring Afghanistan can help the Afghan people to overcome the crisis resulting from the long war unleashed by the US and NATO, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday at a meeting with the foreign ministers of China, Pakistan and representatives of the Iranian foreign ministry in Dushanbe. The text of the opening remarks was published on the official website of the Russian foreign ministry.

"We believe that the countries directly bordering Afghanistan are capable of influencing the situation in the region, as well as helping the Afghan people to overcome the crisis that arose as a result of the twenty-year war unleashed by the United States and NATO. Acting in good faith, we can create the necessary external conditions for the Afghans to decide their own fate without posing a threat to neighboring countries (terrorism, drug trafficking, and so on)," he said.

Lavrov stressed that he considers the opportunity for representatives of the four countries to discuss the situation in Afghanistan on the margins of the SCO summit very important. "The topic is relevant for everyone. A large number of formats for resolving the situation are proposed," the minister said.
