Lavrov to meet UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East

09 June 2021

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will discuss the situation in the Arab-Israeli confrontation with the UN Middle East Coordinator Tor  Wennesland, who will visit Moscow on June 9-10.

"A detailed discussion of recent developments around the West Bank and the Gaza Strip will take place. Particular attention will be paid to eventual consolidated steps by the Middle East Quartet of international mediators comprising Russia, the US, the UN and the EU, aimed at creating the necessary conditions for the soonest establishment of a sustainable negotiation process between the conflicting parties. We see this as the only way to prevent a relapse into armed confrontation," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The ministry stressed that Moscow remains committed to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the principle of two states coexisting within the 1967 borders.

"In this connection, Russia will continue to make active efforts to assist in starting and promoting direct dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis with a focus on the May 21 ceasefire," the diplomatic office pointed out.
