Media reports clashes between Israeli and Arab forces in East Jerusalem

31 January 2023

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces broke out on Tuesday in the Jabel Mukaber neighborhood of East Jerusalem, Al Rai reported, citing sources.

According to the agency, the local population went on a general strike to protest against the policies of the Israeli authorities. Arabs have blocked a number of streets in the neighborhood. Photos circulated by the agency show a street blocked by burning tires.

Information about the clash in Jabel Mukaber was confirmed by Al Jazeera. No casualties or injuries were reported.

The clashes are taking place amid another round of tensions in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. On January 26, Israeli security forces conducted a large-scale anti-terrorist operation in the West Bank city of Jenin, which, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, killed 11 Arabs and wounded about 20 others. In response, several rockets were fired into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, all of which were either intercepted or landed in the enclave. The Israel defense forces then carried out air strikes on the Gaza Strip. On 27 January, there was also an attack near a synagogue in the Jewish Neve Yaakov neighborhood of East Jerusalem that left seven people dead and three others injured.
