Putin asked about Raisi's position on Iran nuclear deal

19 January 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi that he would like to hear his position on the situation around the Iranian nuclear deal.

"It is very important for me to know your position on the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear program]," the Russian president said.

Welcoming his interlocutor and noting points of convergence with Tehran, Putin pointed out that Iran is active as an observer in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He also added that the state's relations with the Eurasian Economic Union are developing on the basis of an interim agreement. "We are actively working to create <...> a free trade zone between Iran and our association," the Russian president added.

The Russian head of state noted that the talks that have begun have a very large agenda. "I am very glad to see you and at the very beginning of our meeting I would like to ask you to give my best wishes to the spiritual leader, Mr. Khamenei, upon your return to Tehran," Putin concluded.

The talks between the two presidents are held in the Catherine Hall of the Kremlin, where Putin usually receives foreign guests. Nevertheless, the epidemiological situation has put its mark on the usual protocol. Putin and Raisi were seated at a large oval table in the center of the room, a few meters apart. There were only two interpreters at the table with them.
