Qatar Hopes for Gaza Ceasefire Following Lebanon-Israel Agreement

27 November

Qatar has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon and expressed optimism that similar efforts could lead to a resolution of the conflict in Gaza. This was outlined in a statement by Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The State of Qatar welcomes the ceasefire agreement in the Republic of Lebanon and expresses hope that it will lead to a similar arrangement to end the ongoing war in Gaza and Israeli attacks on the occupied West Bank," the ministry stated in a post on its X account. Qatar also acknowledged the efforts of the United States and France in facilitating the agreement.

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon took effect on November 27 at 4:00 AM local time. US President Joe Biden highlighted that the agreement includes provisions for Lebanon's army and state security forces to regain control of the country's territory within 60 days, after which Israeli forces will gradually withdraw.

In related developments, France-Presse reported that Hamas has informed mediators in Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey of its willingness to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza. Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Majid bin Mohammed Al-Ansari, speaking at the Mediterranean Dialogues conference in Rome, reiterated Doha’s readiness to resume mediation efforts for a Gaza ceasefire if the involved parties express genuine interest.
