Russian and Iranian Foreign Ministers to discuss Syria and nuclear deal

30 December 2019

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will meet with Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif in Moscow today. According to the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the diplomats will discuss a wide range of aspects regarding Russian-Iranian cooperation, including trade, economic and energy spheres, with a specific focus on respective bilateral projects.

Special attention will be paid to international affairs, including the situation around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear programme, the Syrian peace process, Persian Gulf developments and other regional matters.

It is noted that Russian-Iranian relations are "based on the good traditions of neighborly contacts and mutual respect, and are not dependent on political situations".

"The two countries’ positions on many international matters are close or coincide. Their intensive dialogue at the highest level is making an important contribution to stimulating mutually beneficial cooperation.  In 2019, the presidents of Russia and Iran met four times. Contacts are ongoing between the heads of the foreign affairs agencies, representatives of parliaments, as well as other agencies and organizations," the message reads.
