Russian Foreign Ministry expressed concern over reports of escalation in Yemen

Moscow is worried by the escalation of the situation in and around Yemen and calls on all the forces involved in the conflict to refrain from actions that may lead to new casualties among the population and degradation of the humanitarian situation, the Russian MFA said in a statement.

"Moscow is concerned about reports about the escalation of the situation in and around Yemen," the diplomatic mission said. - "We call on the forces involved in the conflict to refrain from any actions that may lead to new casualties among the population and degradation of the humanitarian situation. We proceed from the fact that the exchange of strikes and related violations of international humanitarian law are a direct consequence of the acute military-political crisis in Yemen that has been going on for almost seven years, the new escalation of which poses a real threat to regional security".

The ministry pointed out that according to the reports they had received, from January 20 to 22 there had been massive airstrikes on military and civilian targets in the territories under the control of the Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement. On January 21, a prison in Sa'ada province was completely destroyed. According to preliminary information, 87 people were killed and 220 wounded. In the province of Hodeidah, a telecommunications center was destroyed and an underwater cable was damaged, which led to the disconnection of the Internet in most of the territory of Yemen, informed the Russian MFA.

In turn, on the night of January 24, the Houthis fired ballistic missiles at the al-Dafra airbase in the UAE and an industrial area in Saudi Arabia's Jizan province. "At the same time they issued a threat that airstrikes on neighboring countries will continue "until the aggression against Yemen is stopped," the ministry informed.

As noted in Smolensk Square, Moscow firmly believes that the launch of an inclusive inter-Yemeni negotiation process under the auspices of the United Nations would help reduce the level of confrontation and resolve the many problems that Yemen faces today and which are largely felt by the states around it. "We intend to actively support the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg," the Russian MFA said.
