Russian Foreign Ministry: US not ready to confirm inadmissibility of nuclear war

22 May 2020

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the fact that the US and NATO are not ready to confirm the inadmissibility of nuclear war.  In an interview with the Kommersant newspaper, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that strategic thinking that is changing in this way is an alarming indicator.

"But unfortunately neither the US nor its closest NATO allies possessing nuclear weapons are ready to reconfirm the well-known formula of the 1980s that there can be no winners in a nuclear war, and it should never be unleashed, which we have repeatedly offered them.  This is an alarming indicator of how the strategic thinking of our partners is evolving," the Russian diplomat said.

Ryabkov added that in fact, the US attributed to Russia "nascent concepts about the possibility of winning the nuclear war.

"On the contrary, we are actively opposed to this approach," said Ryabkov.

In this regard, according to the Deputy Foreign Minister, all future agreements with Washington in the field of arms control should be verified.

"Any agreement must be verifiable.  Given the serial nature of violations of arms control agreements, the United States cannot be ," said the diplomat, recalling that the  Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the Open Skies Treaty have already become "victims of American political will."

President Donald Trump announced about the withdrawal of the USA from the Open Skies Treaty the day before.
