Sergey Lavrov to visit Iran in 2020

30 December 2019

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accepted an invitation from his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif to visit Tehran next year.

"We are very happy with the results of the negotiations. My friend and colleague invited me to visit Tehran next year. I accept this invitation with pleasure", Russian Foreign Minister said at a press conference following the talks.

One of the main topics of discussion, according to Lavrov, was the situation around the Iranian nuclear deal.

The document, as the Minister stressed, is under threat of collapse due to the US steps and inconsistent actions of the EU.

"As a result of the destructive line that Washington continues, this most important achievement of international diplomacy - I mean the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action-is in the risk of collapse. Unfortunately, we note the inconsistency of our colleagues from the European Union, who also do not fulfill their obligations under the JCPOA", Sergey Lavrov said.

In May 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the Iranian nuclear deal concluded in 2015 with the participation of Russia, Great Britain, China, Germany and France, and announced the restoration of all existing anti-Iranian sanctions before the signing of the document.
