Shared Victory: How the 80th Anniversary of the Great Patriotic War is Being Marked Around the World

09 May

In 2025, the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Ceremonies and commemorative events have taken place not only in Russia but across dozens of countries.

Europe

Despite strained relations between Russia and many European nations, people continue to honor their ancestors by taking part in the Immortal Regiment marches. Various remembrance events and traditional flower-laying ceremonies were held to pay tribute to the Soviet soldiers' contribution to the victory over Nazism.

North America

In the US, Victory Day was also marked by special events. For the first time in six years, the Immortal Regiment procession took place in Washington, D.C.—a symbolic gesture of renewed cultural outreach and dialogue.

Middle East

In Turkey, the Immortal Regiment was held for the eighth consecutive year, with marches in both Istanbul and Ankara. Lebanon also hosted its traditional Victory Day events, while Israel saw the largest Victory-themed motorcade in the Middle East to mark the 80th anniversary.

Asia

Across Asian nations, the Immortal Regiment was widely observed. In New Delhi, a new memorial plaque was unveiled to honor Indian citizens who fought in the Great Patriotic War.

Africa

African countries joined the global remembrance, hosting commemorative events in honor of Victory Day. The Immortal Regiment took place in cities like Luanda (Angola) and Hammamet (Tunisia).

Oceania

In Australia, the Immortal Regiment march has become an annual tradition. The procession in Sydney, held since 2013, typically takes place on April 25—coinciding with Anzac Day.

CIS

Throughout the CIS, traditional parades and ceremonies took place. These countries continue to recognize and honor the Soviet people’s sacrifices in the Great Patriotic War by organizing nationwide commemorative events.
