Tajikistan Joins Global “Garden of Memory” Campaign to Honor Great Patriotic War Heroes

16 April

The northern Tajik city of Khujand took part in the international “Garden of Memory” campaign, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War. Participants planted young trees in A. Khujandi City Park in tribute to the soldiers who died fighting against Nazism, the Russian House in Khujand reported.

Among those attending were Russia’s Consul General in Khujand Sergey Lankin, Head of the Russian House Tatyana Mudrova, as well as staff from Russian diplomatic missions, volunteers, and local residents. The event was organized by the Russian House and the Russian Consulate General with the support of the "Volunteers of Victory" movement.

Special mention was given to the contribution of the Leninabad (now Sughd) region of the Tajik SSR, which sent over 76,000 people to the front. Fifty-four of them were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

A similar tree-planting ceremony took place earlier in March in the city of Tursunzoda near Dushanbe. There, Russian diplomats, local schoolchildren, veterans, and representatives of major institutions such as TALCO, Rossotrudnichestvo, and local authorities planted 80 pine trees near the city’s Orthodox cemetery, honoring both the Great Patriotic War soldiers and internationalist fighters buried there.

The “Garden of Memory” initiative, launched in 2020, has since expanded to over 50 countries. In 2024, it kicked off in nations including Cyprus, Abkhazia, Egypt, Spain, Malaysia, and Moldova. This year’s goal is to plant 27 million trees — one for every life lost during the war. The campaign is organized by the “Garden of Memory” nonprofit, “Volunteers of Victory,” and the Victory Marshals Memory Fund, with support from Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and the Federal Forestry Agency.
